Advanced Geosteering & Real-Time Well Placement
This course covers advanced geosteering and real-time well placement. Participants study model-based steering and stratigraphic inversion, deep and ultra-deep azimuthal resistivity interpretation, boundary mapping, complex structural settings, thin bed and faulted reservoir steering, uncertainty management, remote operations workflows, data quality and performance evaluation.
Description
Advanced geosteering uses model-based interpretation and deep reading measurements to place wells in reservoirs where simple correlation is not enough: thin beds, faulted sections, steep structure, stacked targets and reservoirs with subtle property variation. It also increasingly happens remotely, with interpretation in an operations centre and decisions communicated to the rig.
This course covers that practice. It starts with model-based steering and stratigraphic inversion methods, then covers deep and ultra-deep azimuthal resistivity tools, their inversion products and the mapping of boundaries ahead of and around the bit. It covers steering in complex structural settings, including faulted and folded reservoirs, thin bed targets and stacked laterals, and the management of uncertainty in interpretation. The course then covers real-time operations workflows, remote operations centre practice, data transmission and quality, decision governance and handover between shifts, and the evaluation of steering performance against production results.
Deep azimuthal resistivity changed geosteering by letting the team see boundaries several metres from the wellbore before reaching them. Instead of recognising that the well has left the zone, the team can see the boundary approaching and steer before it happens. The measurement is indirect and the result comes from inversion, so understanding what the inversion assumes is part of using it properly.
Model-based steering formalises the process. Rather than correlating logs by eye, the interpretation is a model of layers and dips that is updated as measurements arrive, with the synthetic response compared against the measured one. It handles complexity better than manual correlation and makes the assumptions explicit, which matters when the answer is uncertain.
Remote operations have changed the team structure. Interpretation often happens in a centre supporting several wells, with the rig executing decisions. That works when data transmission, visualisation and communication protocols are good and fails when any of them are not. Decision authority, handover discipline and data quality control become as important as the geology.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Apply model-based steering and stratigraphic inversion methods.
- Interpret deep and ultra-deep azimuthal resistivity inversion products.
- Map boundaries around and ahead of the wellbore.
- Steer in faulted, folded and structurally complex reservoirs.
- Place wells in thin bed and stacked target reservoirs.
- Quantify and manage interpretation uncertainty.
- Operate real-time geosteering workflows and data flows.
- Run remote operations centre geosteering with clear decision governance.
- Apply data quality control to real-time measurements.
- Evaluate steering performance and link it to production outcomes.
The course is instructor-led and advanced, assuming geosteering experience. Participants work through complex steering cases using real deep resistivity and inversion data, updating models and making decisions as the wells progress. Remote operations workflows are covered through real centre practice. Participants are encouraged to bring their own geosteering cases for discussion.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Improve well placement in complex and thin reservoirs.
- Use deep reading measurements effectively rather than as expensive extras.
- Improve remote operations centre geosteering performance.
- Reduce time out of zone and improve reservoir contact.
- Link steering decisions to production outcomes.
