Advanced Drilling Engineering Using MS Excel
This course builds advanced drilling models in Microsoft Excel. Participants build iterative hydraulics, torque and drag, tubular design, temperature profiles, surge and swab, well control simulation, Monte Carlo cost models, large data analysis and dashboards, using live formulas, iterative calculation and Excel's analysis tools with no macros, add-ins or coding.
Description
Once the basic drilling calculations are built, the harder ones follow: calculations that iterate, models that step along the wellbore, probabilistic cost estimates and analysis across hundreds of wells. All of them can be built in Excel with live formulas, and building them gives engineers models they understand and can modify.
This course covers that level. It builds iterative solutions using Excel's iterative calculation and Goal Seek, then develops stepwise models along the wellbore: torque and drag by element, hydraulics with temperature and pressure effects, temperature profiles and surge and swab. It builds full tubular design workbooks with multiple load cases and triaxial checks, well control simulation including circulating a kick, Monte Carlo cost and duration models using Excel's own functions, and large data analysis using PivotTables, Power Query and dynamic array formulas. The course closes with dashboards and reporting. Everything is built with live formulas, iterative calculation and Excel's built-in tools, with no macros, no add-ins and no coding.
Stepwise models are the key technique. Torque and drag, hydraulics with varying temperature, temperature profiles and surge and swab are all built by dividing the well into elements along the depth, calculating each from the one before and summing. Once that pattern is understood, a wide range of drilling models becomes buildable.
Iteration is handled with Excel's own tools. Several drilling calculations are implicit, where the answer appears on both sides of the equation, and Excel's iterative calculation setting or Goal Seek solves them directly without any code.
Monte Carlo analysis needs nothing more than Excel's random and statistical functions. Well duration and cost are uncertain, and a distribution of outcomes is a more useful answer than a single number. Building it with live formulas keeps the model transparent and auditable.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Build iterative calculations using Excel's iterative solver and Goal Seek.
- Build stepwise models that calculate along the wellbore element by element.
- Build torque and drag models with hook load and torque profiles.
- Build hydraulics models including temperature and pressure effects.
- Build wellbore temperature profile models.
- Build surge and swab pressure calculations.
- Build tubular design workbooks with multiple load cases and triaxial checks.
- Build well control simulation including circulating out a kick.
- Build Monte Carlo cost and duration models with Excel functions.
- Analyse large well data sets with PivotTables, Power Query and dynamic arrays, and build dashboards.
The course is instructor-led and entirely hands-on in Microsoft Excel. Participants build each model themselves during the sessions, testing against known results and published examples. All models use live formulas, iterative calculation and Excel's built-in analysis tools, with no macros, add-ins or coding. Participants keep everything they build. Familiarity with basic drilling calculations in Excel is assumed.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Build drilling models in-house without specialist software licences.
- Give engineers models they understand and can modify.
