Riser Systems & Marine Drilling Equipment
This course covers marine drilling risers and associated equipment. Participants study riser system components, riser analysis and tensioning, flex joints and telescopic joints, choke and kill lines, motion compensation, riser running and retrieval, disconnection and emergency systems, riser integrity and fatigue, and operating limits.
Description
The marine riser connects a floating drilling unit to the subsea wellhead. It carries returns to surface, houses the choke and kill lines, supports the lower marine riser package and must tolerate vessel motion, current and weather while remaining within its structural limits. Riser management is one of the main differences between floating and fixed drilling operations.
This course covers the system in detail. It starts with riser components, joints, buoyancy, the telescopic joint, flex joints and the lower marine riser package, then covers riser analysis: tension requirements, stress and angle limits, current and vessel offset effects, and the operating envelopes that result. It covers tensioning systems and heave compensation, choke and kill line arrangements and their hydraulic consequences, and riser running and retrieval operations. The course then covers planned and emergency disconnection, riser recoil, riser integrity management and fatigue, inspection requirements, and the operating limits that govern when drilling can continue and when the riser must be disconnected.
Riser tension is the parameter that keeps the system within limits. Too little and the riser buckles or the flex joint angle exceeds limits; too much and the wellhead and conductor take loads they were not designed for. Tension requirements change with mud weight, water depth, current and vessel offset, and they are calculated for each well rather than assumed.
Flex joint angle and vessel offset define the operating envelope. Analysis produces limits for drilling, connected non-drilling, and disconnect, usually drawn as watch circles. Operations run inside the first; when weather or position moves the vessel towards the second and third, the sequence of hanging off, disconnecting and recovering has to start early enough to complete safely.
Fatigue is the long-term issue. Risers and wellheads accumulate damage from vessel motion and vortex-induced vibration over years of service, concentrated at specific joints and at the wellhead connection. Tracking that damage, rotating joints and inspecting to a defined programme is what keeps a riser string fit for service.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe marine riser system components and their functions.
- Calculate riser tension requirements for given conditions.
- Apply riser analysis to determine stress, angle and offset limits.
- Define drilling, connected and disconnect operating envelopes.
- Describe tensioning systems and heave compensation.
- Specify choke and kill line arrangements and assess their hydraulic effects.
- Plan riser running and retrieval operations.
- Plan planned and emergency disconnection, including recoil management.
- Manage riser integrity, fatigue and inspection.
- Apply operating limits and decision criteria in changing weather conditions.
The course is instructor-led. Riser components and equipment are covered with drawings and specifications, and riser analysis through worked examples producing tension requirements and operating envelopes. Operations are covered with procedures and field cases, including disconnect events. Participants are encouraged to bring their own riser data for discussion.
