AI for Drilling Optimization & Real-Time Decisions
This course covers artificial intelligence applied to real-time drilling decisions. Participants study decision problems in drilling, real-time data and inference, parameter optimisation methods, early warning and event detection, advisory system design, human factors and alarm management, trust and explainability, deployment architecture, governance and value measurement.
Description
Real-time drilling decisions are made continuously: parameters, when to circulate, when to trip, whether something is developing. Artificial intelligence methods can support those decisions by recommending parameters, detecting developing problems and surfacing patterns from similar wells, provided the system presents its output in a way the rig will use.
This course covers application and deployment. It starts with the decisions drilling teams actually make and which of them can be supported by automated methods, then covers real-time data and inference requirements. It covers optimisation methods for drilling parameters, including objective definition and constraint handling, and early warning methods for pack-off, stuck pipe, washouts and equipment problems. It then covers advisory system design, human factors, alarm management and the trust and explainability that determine whether advice is followed, deployment architecture and reliability, governance and accountability for automated advice, and the measurement of value delivered in real operations.
An alert that is ignored has negative value. It consumes attention, trains the crew to dismiss the system and crowds out the alerts that matter. Alarm rate, false positive management and the clarity of what the operator should do are therefore design parameters, not afterthoughts.
Explainability drives adoption. A driller told to increase weight by two thousand pounds will ask why, and a system that can show which measurements led to the recommendation gets followed, while a black box recommendation does not. This matters more in drilling than in many domains because the consequences of a wrong action are immediate and expensive.
Governance questions arrive with deployment. Who is accountable when advice is wrong, who can override, how recommendations are recorded and what happens when the system is unavailable are questions that should be answered before the system reaches the rig floor rather than after the first incident.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify drilling decisions suitable for automated support.
- Specify real-time data and inference requirements.
- Apply optimisation methods to drilling parameter selection.
- Define objectives and constraints for drilling optimisation.
- Build early warning methods for developing drilling problems.
- Design advisory systems for use at the rig.
- Apply human factors and alarm management principles.
- Design for trust and explainability in recommendations.
- Design deployment architecture with adequate reliability.
- Establish governance, accountability and value measurement for deployed systems.
The course is instructor-led, combining method work with system and deployment design. Participants build and test real-time detection and optimisation approaches on drilling data, then design the advisory interface, alarm strategy and governance around them. Cases cover systems adopted at the rig and systems that were switched off. Prior analytics or Python familiarity is helpful.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Support real-time drilling decisions with reliable automated advice.
- Detect developing problems earlier and act on them.
- Improve parameter selection consistency across crews.
- Design systems the rig will actually use.
- Establish governance for automated advice in operations.
