Jack-Up Rig Operations & Site Assessment
This course covers jackup rig operations and site assessment. Participants study jackup types and capabilities, site investigation and soil data, leg penetration and punch-through risk, preload procedures, jacking operations, rig moves and positioning, platform approach and cantilever operations, storm and environmental limits, and structural integrity assessment.
Description
A jackup stands on the seabed on three or more legs, lifted clear of the water on its own jacking system. Its operating envelope depends entirely on the seabed it stands on and on the structural capacity of the hull, legs and spudcans. Site assessment before arrival and correct preload and jacking procedures are what prevent leg penetration failures and the loss of the unit.
This course covers both the engineering and the operations. It starts with jackup types, capabilities and components, then covers site investigation requirements: soil borings, geotechnical data, seabed surveys and previous installation records. It covers leg penetration prediction, punch-through risk in layered soils, scour and seabed hazards, and the site-specific assessment that determines whether a unit can operate at a location. It then covers preload procedures, jacking operations, rig moves, towing and positioning, and platform approach and cantilever operations. The course closes with storm and environmental limits, elevated and afloat conditions, structural integrity assessment and the inspection of legs, spudcans and jacking systems.
Punch-through is the hazard that defines jackup site assessment. Where a stronger layer overlies a weaker one, a leg that is carrying load on the upper layer can break through suddenly, dropping the unit and damaging the leg, hull and sometimes the platform alongside. Predicting leg penetration from soil data, and preloading carefully to test the seabed before the unit is elevated, is the control.
Site-specific assessment is a structural calculation as well as a geotechnical one. The unit must withstand the extreme environmental loads expected at the location in its elevated condition, with the air gap, leg length and soil fixity it will have there. A unit that is suitable at one location may not be at another in the same field.
Operations around platforms add precision requirements. Approaching a fixed platform, positioning so the cantilever can reach the slots, and jacking alongside with clearances measured in metres demands planning, weather windows and careful execution, and incidents during approach are among the more common causes of damage.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe jackup types, components and capabilities.
- Specify site investigation and geotechnical data requirements.
- Predict leg penetration from soil data.
- Assess punch-through risk and plan mitigation.
- Carry out and interpret site-specific assessment.
- Plan and execute preload procedures.
- Plan jacking operations and leg handling.
- Plan rig moves, towing and positioning, including platform approach.
- Operate cantilever systems and plan slot access.
- Apply environmental limits and assess structural integrity and inspection requirements.
The course is instructor-led. Site assessment is taught using real soil data and leg penetration predictions, with participants assessing locations and recommending acceptance or rejection. Operations are covered with procedures, move plans and incident cases including punch-through events. Participants are encouraged to bring their own locations and rigs for discussion.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Reduce the risk of punch-through and leg penetration incidents.
- Improve site assessment and location acceptance decisions.
- Improve rig move and platform approach planning.
- Operate within structural and environmental limits.
- Reduce damage and downtime during jackup operations.
