Real-Time Drilling Data & Remote Operations Centres
This course covers real-time drilling data systems and remote operations centres. Participants study data acquisition and transmission, standards and interoperability, data quality, real-time visualisation and analytics, drilling advisory systems, remote operations centre design and staffing, decision authority, communication protocols, cyber security and value assessment.
Description
Real-time drilling data links the rig to onshore specialists, allowing wells to be monitored and supported from an operations centre. Where it works, problems are seen sooner, expertise reaches more wells and fewer people are needed at the rig. Where it fails, it produces screens nobody watches and advice nobody follows.
This course covers the technical and organisational sides. It starts with data acquisition at the rig, sensors, aggregation and transmission, then covers data standards, interoperability and the interfaces between service company and operator systems. It covers data quality, latency and validation, real-time visualisation and analytics, and drilling advisory and automation systems. It then covers remote operations centre design, staffing models, roles and decision authority, communication protocols between centre and rig, shift handover, cyber security for connected operational systems, and the measurement of value delivered by real-time support.
The organisational design matters more than the technology. A centre with clear roles, defined decision authority and agreed communication protocols adds value; one where onshore staff watch screens and offer opinions without accountability creates friction with the rig and is eventually ignored. Deciding who decides what is the first design question.
Data quality determines trust. Sensors that drift, depth that is wrong, gaps in transmission and inconsistent tag naming produce analysis nobody believes, and once the rig stops trusting the centre's data the relationship is hard to recover. Validation at source and visible data quality indicators are therefore part of the system rather than an afterthought.
Value should be measured. Real-time operations centres are usually justified by avoided incidents and improved performance, both of which can be tracked if the baseline is defined. Centres that never measure their contribution tend to be cut in the next cost reduction, regardless of whether they were working.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe rig data acquisition, aggregation and transmission systems.
- Apply data standards and manage interoperability between systems.
- Assess and manage data quality, latency and validation.
- Design real-time visualisation for different users.
- Apply analytics and drilling advisory systems to real-time data.
- Design remote operations centre layout, staffing and roles.
- Define decision authority between centre and rig.
- Establish communication protocols and handover practice.
- Apply cyber security measures to connected operational systems.
- Measure and report the value delivered by real-time operations.
The course is instructor-led. Data systems and architecture are covered with real configurations, and participants design a remote operations centre including staffing, roles, protocols and performance measures. Cases cover centres that delivered measurable value and centres that were closed, with the reasons. Participants are encouraged to bring their own systems for discussion.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Detect drilling problems earlier through real-time monitoring.
- Extend specialist support across more wells with fewer people.
- Improve data quality and trust between rig and office.
- Define decision authority and avoid friction with rig teams.
- Measure and demonstrate the value of real-time operations.
Participants will:
- Understand real-time drilling data systems end to end.
- Be able to assess and improve data quality.
- Be able to design centre roles, protocols and authority.
- Understand analytics and advisory systems and their limits.
- Be able to measure the value of real-time support.
