Formation Evaluation While Drilling
This course covers formation evaluation using while-drilling measurements. Participants study petrophysical interpretation of logging while drilling data, lithology and porosity determination, saturation evaluation, invasion and time-lapse effects, formation pressure testing while drilling, sampling, imaging interpretation, integration with cuttings and mud logging data, and real-time decision making.
Description
Formation evaluation while drilling provides answers before the hole is disturbed by invasion or instability, and in high angle wells where wireline logging is difficult it may be the only practical option. The measurements are the same in principle as wireline but made under different conditions, and interpretation must account for that.
This course covers the interpretation. It starts with the measurements available while drilling and their differences from wireline equivalents, then covers lithology and porosity determination, saturation evaluation and the resistivity interpretation behind it. It covers invasion effects and time-lapse measurements that exploit them, formation pressure testing and fluid sampling while drilling, and borehole image interpretation for structure and fractures. The course then covers integration with cuttings descriptions, mud logging gas data and drilling parameters, the construction of a formation evaluation answer in real time, and the decisions it supports: coring, casing points, testing and completion design.
Measuring early is the main advantage. Resistivity and density measurements made minutes after the bit sees less invasion than wireline logs run days later, which gives a cleaner view of the virgin formation, and in shale sections it avoids the hole degradation that makes later logs unusable.
Time-lapse measurement turns invasion into information. By logging the same interval at different times, the change in resistivity profile shows how deeply mud filtrate has invaded, which indicates permeability and movable fluid. It requires planning, since the second pass has to be acquired deliberately.
Real-time evaluation drives real decisions. Whether to core, where to set casing, whether a zone is worth testing and how to complete it are decided from data arriving while the well drills, often within hours. The interpretation therefore needs to be good enough to act on, with its uncertainty stated honestly.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Compare while-drilling and wireline measurements and their conditions.
- Determine lithology and porosity from logging while drilling data.
- Evaluate saturation from resistivity and porosity measurements.
- Interpret invasion effects and apply time-lapse measurements.
- Plan and interpret formation pressure testing while drilling.
- Plan fluid sampling while drilling and assess sample quality.
- Interpret borehole images for structure, dip and fractures.
- Integrate cuttings, mud logging and drilling parameter data with log interpretation.
- Build a real-time formation evaluation answer with stated uncertainty.
- Support coring, casing, testing and completion decisions from while-drilling data.
The course is instructor-led and interpretation-based. Participants interpret real logging while drilling data sets, building lithology, porosity and saturation answers and comparing them with wireline and core where available. Real-time decision exercises require recommendations on coring and casing from partial data. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data for discussion.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Get formation evaluation answers early enough to act on.
- Reduce reliance on wireline logging in difficult holes.
- Improve coring, casing and testing decisions.
- Improve integration between subsurface and drilling teams.
- Make better use of data already being acquired.
Participants will:
- Be able to interpret logging while drilling data petrophysically.
- Understand invasion and time-lapse interpretation.
- Be able to plan and interpret pressure testing and sampling while drilling.
- Be able to integrate log, cuttings and drilling data.
- Be able to make and defend real-time recommendations.
