Subsea BOP & Control Systems
This course covers subsea blowout preventer stacks and their control systems. Participants study stack configuration and components, lower marine riser packages, control pod architecture, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems, emergency and secondary intervention systems, testing requirements, reliability and maintenance, stack retrieval and regulatory expectations.
Description
A subsea blowout preventer stack sits on the wellhead in deep water, operated through control pods and umbilicals from a vessel that may be moving. It must function reliably for months between retrievals, close and seal on command, shear pipe if required, and provide emergency functions if the vessel loses position or power. Its reliability determines a large part of deepwater downtime.
This course covers the system in detail. It starts with stack configuration, ram and annular arrangement, the lower marine riser package and the connectors that join them, then covers control pod architecture, hydraulic supply, accumulators and the response time requirements at depth. It covers multiplex electro-hydraulic control, redundancy and pod switching, and the emergency systems: emergency disconnect sequence, deadman, autoshear and acoustic backup. The course then covers testing requirements and procedures, condition monitoring, reliability data and failure modes, maintenance and recertification, stack retrieval decisions, and the regulatory framework that governs subsea equipment.
Response time at depth is a design problem. Hydraulic fluid has to travel from the surface or from subsea accumulators to the function being operated, against ambient pressure, and the regulations specify how quickly key functions must complete. Accumulator sizing at depth, allowing for ambient pressure effects on precharge, is one of the calculations most often got wrong.
Redundancy is the answer to inaccessibility. Two control pods, dual hydraulic supply, multiple shear functions and independent emergency systems exist because a failed component on the seabed cannot be repaired without pulling the stack, which costs days. The design philosophy is to keep operating with a failure rather than to prevent all failures.
Testing frequency and scope are heavily regulated, and the records are examined after any incident. Function tests, pressure tests, pod testing and the verification of emergency systems all have defined intervals, and the practical challenge is completing them without consuming excessive rig time. Planning tests around operations rather than as interruptions is part of competent subsea management.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe subsea stack configuration and the function of each component.
- Describe the lower marine riser package and stack connectors.
- Explain control pod architecture and hydraulic supply systems.
- Calculate accumulator requirements and response times at depth.
- Describe multiplex electro-hydraulic control and redundancy.
- Explain emergency systems, including emergency disconnect, deadman and autoshear.
- Specify testing requirements and plan test programmes.
- Apply condition monitoring and reliability analysis.
- Plan maintenance, recertification and stack retrieval.
- Apply regulatory requirements for subsea pressure control equipment.
The course is instructor-led. The stack and control system are covered with schematics, component drawings and manufacturer data, and participants carry out accumulator and response time calculations. Testing programmes, reliability data and failure cases from operating fields are examined. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment and test records for discussion.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Improve subsea stack reliability and reduce unplanned retrievals.
- Verify accumulator capacity and response times correctly.
- Improve testing planning, execution and records.
- Meet regulatory requirements for subsea pressure control.
- Strengthen subsea competence in drilling and rig teams.
