Deepwater Familiarisation
This course gives a broad introduction to deepwater operations. Participants study deepwater developments and field concepts, floating drilling units, subsea equipment, the deepwater well construction sequence, drilling and completion challenges, production systems, logistics and marine operations, HSE and emergency response, and the cost structure of deepwater work.
Description
Deepwater projects involve large teams across drilling, subsea, facilities, marine, logistics and commercial functions, many of whom need to understand the whole operation without being specialists in any part of it. This course provides that understanding, covering how deepwater fields are developed, drilled, completed and produced, and why each stage works the way it does.
It starts with deepwater development concepts and field architecture, then covers floating drilling units, station keeping and marine systems. It covers subsea equipment, including wellheads, blowout preventers, trees and manifolds, and the deepwater well construction sequence from site survey through riserless top hole to completion. It then covers the main drilling and completion challenges, including narrow margins, shallow hazards, cold temperatures and intervention difficulty, and the production systems that follow: risers, flowlines, flow assurance and host facilities. The course closes with logistics and marine operations, HSE and emergency response, and the cost structure that makes deepwater projects what they are.
Deepwater is defined less by depth than by consequence. Everything is remote, equipment sits on the seabed where access needs a vessel, the daily cost of a rig is very high, and the margin for error in pressure, position and weather is small. Those four facts explain most of how deepwater operations are organised.
The well construction sequence reflects it. A site survey clears shallow hazards, the top hole is drilled riserless, the wellhead and blowout preventer are installed on the seabed, and the rest of the well is drilled through a riser with every return and every pressure measured. Each stage has its own equipment and its own failure modes.
Understanding the whole chain helps everybody in it. Logistics staff who know why a riser running operation cannot be interrupted plan differently; commercial staff who understand daily cost structure negotiate differently; engineers from one discipline who understand the next make better handovers. This course is built for that shared understanding rather than for specialist depth.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe deepwater development concepts and field architecture.
- Identify floating drilling unit types and their capabilities.
- Explain station keeping, marine systems and their operating limits.
- Describe subsea equipment and its functions.
- Follow the deepwater well construction sequence from survey to completion.
- Explain the main deepwater drilling and completion challenges.
- Describe deepwater production systems and flow assurance requirements.
- Describe logistics, supply and marine operations.
- Explain HSE requirements and emergency response offshore.
- Understand deepwater cost structure and its implications.
The course is instructor-led and introductory, with no specialist background assumed. Deepwater operations are explained through diagrams, equipment photographs, field layouts and operational sequences, with field examples throughout. It is suitable for mixed audiences from technical, operational and commercial functions.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Build shared understanding of deepwater operations across functions.
- Improve communication between disciplines on deepwater projects.
- Shorten the time new staff take to contribute.
- Improve logistics, planning and commercial decisions through operational understanding.
- Provide a foundation for specialist deepwater training.
