Completion Running & Installation Procedures
This course covers completion running and installation. Participants study pre-installation preparation and wellbore clean-up, equipment inspection and make-up, running procedures and space-out, packer setting and testing, control line and gauge installation, displacement, barrier management, problem handling, handover to production and installation reporting.
Description
A completion is a carefully designed string that becomes useful only if it is installed correctly. Installation is where equipment is damaged, control lines are crushed, packers are set in the wrong place, debris is left in the well and barriers are compromised, and most completion failures in the first year trace back to the installation rather than the design.
This course covers that work. It starts with pre-installation preparation: wellbore clean-up, scraping, displacement to completion fluid and verification of hole condition, then covers equipment receipt, inspection, make-up and handling practice. It covers running procedures, including depth control, space-out calculations, control line and gauge installation and protection, and the setting and testing of packers and seal assemblies. It then covers displacement and final fluid placement, barrier management throughout the operation, the handling of problems during running, handover to production and the installation records that matter later.
Wellbore preparation decides whether the completion lands clean. Debris, cement, scale and swarf left in the hole end up in the packer bore, under the seal assembly or inside the safety valve, and the result is a packer that will not set or a valve that will not close. Scraping, circulating and verifying returns before running is not optional work.
Control lines are the most commonly damaged item. They are clamped to the outside of the tubing, run past every restriction and are crushed, nicked or pulled apart by careless handling at the rotary table. A damaged control line means a safety valve that cannot be operated or a gauge that reads nothing, and both usually mean pulling the completion.
Space-out is the calculation that determines whether anything works. The distance from the hanger to the packer, allowing for stretch, temperature and the seal arrangement, has to be right within a narrow tolerance, and getting it wrong means either a completion that will not land or seals positioned outside their stroke range.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Plan wellbore clean-up and verify hole condition before running.
- Specify equipment inspection, receipt and handling procedures.
- Apply make-up practice for completion components and connections.
- Plan running procedures, depth control and space-out calculations.
- Install and protect control lines, gauges and downhole instrumentation.
- Set and test packers and seal assemblies.
- Plan displacement and final fluid placement.
- Manage barriers throughout the installation sequence.
- Handle problems during running and decide when to pull back.
- Complete installation records and hand over to production.
The course is instructor-led and procedure-based. Participants build installation programmes for given completions, including clean-up, running sequence, space-out and testing, then work through problem scenarios encountered during running. Field cases cover installation failures and their causes. Participants are encouraged to bring their own installation programmes for discussion.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Reduce completion failures caused by installation problems.
- Improve wellbore preparation and clean-up practice.
- Protect control lines and downhole instrumentation during running.
- Improve space-out accuracy and packer setting reliability.
- Improve installation records and handover quality.
