Python for Drilling Engineering
This course teaches Python for drilling engineering work. Participants learn Python basics, data handling with pandas, drilling data cleaning and validation, plotting and reporting, trajectory and survey calculations, hydraulics and torque and drag in code, drilling performance analysis, automation of routine tasks and good practice for sharing code.
Description
Drilling engineers spend a large share of their time assembling data, repeating calculations and producing the same reports. Python removes most of that repetition. It reads daily reports, real-time data and service company files, cleans and validates them, performs the standard drilling calculations, produces plots and reports, and repeats the whole workflow on the next well without further effort.
This course teaches Python through drilling work. It starts with Python fundamentals and the scientific libraries, then covers reading and handling drilling data with pandas, data cleaning and validation, and plotting. It then builds drilling engineering calculations in code: survey and trajectory calculations, anti-collision checks, hydraulics, torque and drag, and casing design checks. It covers drilling performance analysis across wells, including time breakdown, benchmarking and non-productive time analysis, and closes with automating routine reporting, structuring reusable code, version control and sharing work with colleagues.
Survey and trajectory calculations are the natural starting point. They are well defined, repeated constantly and tedious by hand, and once written they run on any well. From there the same approach extends to hydraulics, torque and drag and casing checks, each of which becomes a function that can be applied across a campaign rather than a spreadsheet for one well.
Performance analysis is where the biggest gain usually sits. Comparing time breakdowns across thirty wells, finding where flat time is lost and benchmarking crews or rigs is impractical by hand and straightforward in code. Most drilling organisations have the data and never analyse it at that scale.
No prior programming experience is assumed. The aim is engineers who can write, read and modify practical scripts, automate their own routine work and understand code written by others, not software developers. Everything is built around drilling tasks participants already do.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Write Python programs using core language features and standard libraries.
- Read, combine and handle drilling data using pandas.
- Clean, validate and flag errors in drilling data sets.
- Produce plots and automated reports from drilling data.
- Implement survey and trajectory calculations in code.
- Implement anti-collision separation calculations.
- Build hydraulics and torque and drag calculations.
- Implement casing design checks and load case calculations.
- Analyse drilling performance and non-productive time across wells.
- Automate routine tasks and structure, document and share reusable code.
The course is instructor-led and hands-on. Participants write code throughout, working on drilling engineering tasks with real data, building from short scripts to a complete performance analysis and reporting workflow. No prior programming experience is assumed. All code written during the course is retained by participants.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Automate repetitive drilling engineering and reporting work.
- Analyse performance across wells and campaigns at scale.
- Improve consistency and auditability of routine calculations.
- Improve data validation and error detection.
- Build internal capability that reduces dependence on external tools.
Participants will:
- Be able to write and modify practical Python scripts.
- Be able to handle and clean drilling data efficiently.
