Rig Inspection, Acceptance & Audit
This course covers rig inspection, acceptance and audit. Participants study inspection scope and standards, documentation and certification review, structural and lifting equipment inspection, pressure control and well control equipment, mechanical, electrical and marine systems, safety systems, competence and management systems, findings classification, close-out and contract interfaces.
Description
Before a rig starts work, the operator needs to know that its equipment is fit, certified and maintained, that its systems function and that its crew is competent. Rig acceptance inspections and audits provide that assurance, and they are also a contractual process, since findings translate into rectification work, commercial discussion and sometimes rejection.
This course covers the whole process. It starts with inspection types, scope and the standards and guidelines that define them, then covers planning an inspection, documentation and certification review, and the records that should exist before anyone looks at equipment. It covers structural inspection, hoisting and lifting equipment, pressure control and well control equipment including testing records, mechanical and electrical systems, marine systems for floating and jackup units, and safety and emergency systems. The course then covers crew competence and management system review, the classification and reporting of findings, close-out and verification, and the contractual and commercial interfaces that surround the process.
Documentation review often finds more than the walk-around. Missing certification, expired inspections, maintenance records that show deferrals and test charts that do not match the claimed pressures reveal how the rig is actually managed, and they can be reviewed before anyone travels. A good inspection starts in the office.
Findings need classification, not just listing. A finding that stops the rig working is different from one that must be fixed before spudding, which is different from an observation for improvement. Classifying findings consistently is what makes the report usable for both the operator and the contractor, and what prevents arguments about what matters.
Acceptance is a decision, not a document. At some point the operator decides to take the rig with a defined list of outstanding items and agreed rectification dates. Managing that list, verifying close-out and keeping it visible during operations is as important as the inspection that produced it.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define inspection types, scope and applicable standards.
- Plan a rig inspection or audit, including team and schedule.
- Review documentation, certification and maintenance records.
- Inspect structural, hoisting and lifting equipment.
- Inspect pressure control and well control equipment and review test records.
- Inspect mechanical, electrical and power systems.
- Inspect marine systems for floating and jackup units.
- Review safety systems, emergency equipment and drills.
- Assess crew competence and management systems.
- Classify findings, manage close-out and handle contractual interfaces.
The course is instructor-led and checklist-based. Participants work through inspection scopes, review real documentation and test records, and classify findings from case material. Contractual and commercial aspects are covered with examples of acceptance negotiations. Participants are encouraged to bring their own inspection reports for discussion.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Accept rigs that are genuinely fit for the intended work.
- Identify equipment and management deficiencies before operations start.
- Reduce equipment-related downtime after rig start-up.
- Improve consistency and quality of inspection reports.
- Manage rectification and close-out effectively.
Participants will:
- Be able to plan and conduct a rig inspection or audit.
- Be able to review certification and maintenance documentation.
