Advanced Acidizing: Design, Lab Testing, Simulation & Field Application
Description
Beyond standard acid treatments lies a set of harder problems: high temperature wells where conventional inhibitors fail, tight carbonates where wormholing is inefficient, long horizontal intervals where placement dominates, acid sensitive formations where precipitation is difficult to control, and acid fracturing where etched conductivity must survive closure stress. These problems need laboratory data, simulation and careful field execution rather than standard job templates.
This course covers that ground. It begins with laboratory testing: core flood tests, wormhole efficiency curves, acid-rock reaction measurement, conductivity testing of etched fractures, corrosion inhibitor qualification and compatibility screening. It then covers the acid systems developed for difficult conditions, acid fracturing design including fluid loss, etching patterns and conductivity, and the simulation of matrix and fracture acid treatments. The course closes with translating laboratory and simulation results into field procedures, execution control and post-job evaluation.
Acid treatment design has moved well beyond rules of thumb. Core flood testing gives pore volume to breakthrough curves that define optimum injection rate for a specific rock. Conductivity testing under closure stress shows whether an acid-etched fracture will stay open in a soft carbonate. Inhibitor qualification at bottomhole temperature shows whether tubing will survive the job. Where these tests are done, treatment results are predictable; where they are skipped, results vary from well to well without explanation.
Simulation adds the ability to test design choices before pumping. Matrix acid models predict wormhole penetration and skin evolution along an interval. Acid fracture models predict fracture geometry, acid penetration distance, etching and resulting conductivity. Both depend on the laboratory data that feeds them, which is why testing and simulation belong together.
The final step is field execution. A design is only as good as the fluids mixed at the wellsite, the rates achieved, the diversion that works and the flowback that recovers spent acid before it precipitates. This course connects all three stages, from laboratory bench to field result, and covers how to evaluate whether the design assumptions held.
