Production Data Management & Power BI Dashboards
Description
Production reporting fails more often on data than on presentation. Sources disagree, wells are named differently in each system, tests are missing, units are inconsistent and errors are corrected in one place and not another. This course covers both halves of the problem: getting production data into a clean, well-structured model, and building dashboards in Power BI that people actually use.
It starts with production data sources, structures and the common quality problems, then covers data modelling for production reporting, including well hierarchies, time dimensions and the handling of allocation and test data. It then covers Power Query for extracting and transforming data, and DAX for building the measures production reporting needs: rates, cumulative volumes, uptime, deferment, efficiency and comparisons against target. The second half covers dashboard design for production, surveillance and management audiences, visual choice, performance and refresh, distribution and access control, and the governance needed to keep a reporting system trustworthy over time.
A production dashboard is only as good as the model behind it. If well names, dates and units are not consistent, no amount of visual design will make the numbers agree, and the first time a manager finds two dashboards showing different production for the same day, trust in all of them disappears. Data modelling therefore comes before visualisation, always.
Power BI handles this work well when it is used properly. Power Query does the extraction and cleaning in a repeatable way, so the same transformations apply every refresh rather than being done by hand. A well-designed star schema with proper date and well dimensions makes measures simple. DAX then provides the calculations, and if the model is right, most production measures are straightforward.
Dashboard design is about the decision, not the data. A field operations dashboard should show what is down and what needs attention today. A surveillance dashboard should show which wells are outside expectation. A management dashboard should show production against target and the main loss causes. Trying to serve all three in one page produces something nobody uses. This course covers the modelling discipline and the design judgement together.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify production data sources, their structures and their common quality problems.
- Define validation rules and manage production data quality.
- Design a data model for production reporting, including well and time dimensions.
- Use Power Query to extract, clean and transform production data repeatably.
- Write DAX measures for rates, volumes, uptime, deferment and efficiency.
- Build comparisons against targets, budgets and prior periods.
- Design dashboards for operations, surveillance and management audiences.
- Select appropriate visuals and avoid common presentation errors.
- Configure refresh, performance, distribution and access control.
- Apply governance so reports remain accurate and trusted over time.
Organisations sending participants to this training will:
- Produce production reporting the organisation trusts.
- Reduce manual effort in routine reporting.
- Improve data quality through repeatable validation.
- Give operations, engineering and management reports suited to their decisions.
- Keep reporting accurate as data sources and requirements change.
Participants will:
- Understand production data structures and quality issues.
- Be able to model production data properly.
- Be able to build and maintain Power BI dashboards.
- Be able to write the DAX measures production reporting needs.
